GERDA: 40 – 45 years of age. Elise’s mother, dignified, and cherub-like, also an American of German decent. While being, without question, a lovely woman, GERDA maintains the countenance of a middle-aged relative one despised having to kiss as a child. Gerda has been a sexually-repressed, closet lesbian her entire life – or at the very least, extraordinarily bi-curious – either scenario insurmountable as a result of the early1920s period. That is until her arrival in Berlin. A prototype for this character could be Shelly Winters in Lolita.
